I designed an alternative first layer box insert for the board game, Vampire: the Masquerade - Chapters. I made this with a few design goals in mind:
Make setup & tear-down faster and easier
Accommodate sleaved cards
Organize the components
Keep each player's stuff together
This is designed to replace the bottom layer of the standard box insert (and takes over some token storage, too). It's got a bunch of different parts, several of which are designed to nest together in specific ways (hence all of the photos).
Box Spacers: to let the 2nd layer insert set properly, the 1st layer stuff can't go all the way to the edges of the box. To that end, you'll need 2 prints of the box spacer, which is available either as a single piece (box-spacer.stl) or split into two pieces (box-spacer-a.stl and box-spacer-b.stl). The booklets will sit nestled within one of these and the other will go into the opposite corner to hold the other components in place.
Booklet Divider: this (booklet-divider.stl) is a Quality-of-Life thing; just print it and slide it into the row of booklets to mark where you currently are in the progression so that it'll be easier to find the next booklet when you need it.
Character Boards Holder: this (character-boards.stl) holds the dual-layer cardboard character boards for each character and has been designed with plenty of room for the expansion characters. It goes directly on the bottom of the box and has little tabs to help keep the Small Cards Holder in place on top of it.
Character Sheets & Envelopes Holder: this (character-sheets-envelopes.stl) stores the envelopes and the unused character sheets. It's also been customized to support the pieces that sit on top of it (partially the Small Cards Holder, and both the Big Cards and the Status Tokens).
Small Cards Holder: this (small-cards.stl) holds all of the small cards in the game, each with its own section. It sits mostly atop the Character Boards Holder although it overhangs a bit over the raised section of the Character Sheets & Envelopes Holder. I'll include a photo showing where each card type goes in this holder.
Big Cards Holder: this (big-cards.stl) holds all of the NPC State cards as well as the initiative tokens on its sides. The initiative token slots are sized for 2 tokens each, so that the numbered pairs can be kept together for ease of use. There is an optional cover (big-cards-cover.stl) that you can print out to better keep the initiative tokens in place. This sits on top of the Character Sheets & Envelops Holder directly against the Small Cards Holder.
Status Tokens Holder: this (status tokens.stl) holds all of the round status tokens in the game. There are spacers so that the tops are all relatively level, but I've included a version without the spacers (and the spacers separately) if you want to change the order i which they're stored. There's an optional lid (status tokens lid.stl) for this that can help keep the tokens in the holder while moving the box around.
State Card Holder: this (VtMC_State_Card_Holder.stl) is designed to hold NPC State cards and has a track for the damage tracker ankh so that it doesn't dent up the state cards when in use. I printed 9 of these because I misplaced one of the ankhs during my initial component count. These go in the State Card Holder Organizer for storage.
State Card Holder Organizer: this (NPC State Card Holder Organizer.stl) has slots to store up to 9 of the State Card Holders. This goes in the very middle of the box, holding the space between the booklets and the other 3D Printed containers with the middle row spacers to either side of it.
Middle Row Spacers: these (middle-row-spacer-a.stl and middle-row-spacer-b.stl) hold the rest of the space in the middle row, keeping the 3D printed containers where they belong in the box.
Player Storage: this (player storage.stl) is designed to keep each players' stuff together. It's got two slots for small cards (I put my combat deck in one and my items, disciplines, humanity, and effect cards in the other) and one thin slot for a folder-in-half character sheet. The whole thing is sized so that it can fit into the optional Clan Dice Bags from the kickstarter. They can either be kept in those dice bags in middle-row-spacer-b (for 3 or fewer players), or they can be put upright directly into middle-row-spacer-a with the dice bags holding each player's cubes, skull tokens, and boons in middle-row-spacer-b.
NPC Token Dividers: this (NPC Token Divider.stl) subdivides the NPC Token storage compartments into 3 smaller sections so that you don't have to dig through as many NPC tokens when looking for a particular one. You can print two of these to cover both slots.
To put this all together, follow these steps:
Print 2 copies of the Box Spacer and put them in the box against the corners.
Put all of the booklets in a row against one of the Box Spacers so that the high tips on its edges will keep the outer-most booklets from pressing all the way against the side of the box.
Put the Character Boards Holder and the Character Sheets and Envelopes Holder against the opposite side of the box, nestled within the second Box Spacer. The high end of the Character Sheets and Envelopes Holder should be towards the Character Boards Holder.
Put the Small Cards Holder on top of the Character Boards Holder, pressed against the Box Spacer on one end and aligned by the tabs on the top of the Character Boards Holder.
Put the Big Cards Holder on top of the Character Sheets and Envelopes Holder in the slot, pressed up against the Small Cards Holder.
Put the Status Tokens Holder on top of the Character Sheets and Envelopes Holder in the remaining gap. There's a raised edge on the Character Sheets and Envelopes Holder that will keep it firmly in place.
Place the Middle Row Spacers in the middle row, keeping a gap between them open.
Place the State Card Holder Organizer into the gap in the middle row.
Place the State Card Holders into the State Card Holder Organizer.
Place the Player Storage boxes in the Middle Row Spacers as desired.
Place the 2nd Layer of the standard insert into the box. I put the side with the PC Minis over the 3D Printed containers so that the other side can rest firmly on top of the booklets.
Optional: Print two NPC Token Dividers to help organize the NPCs on Layer 2.
Place the 3rd Layer of the standard insert into the box. I put the “heavy side” where the booklets and board tiles will go over the tokens side of the 2nd layer so that their weight will be supported by the booklets.
Enjoy some cake, you've earned it!
